Dr. Thomas Massie was the eldest son of Maj. Thomas Massie (1747-1834) of "Level Green," Nelson County, Va., and his first wife, Sarah "Sallie" (Cocke) Massie (1760-1838). Dr. Massie married twice, first to Lucy Waller (1792-1822), with whom he had five children, and then to Sarah Carrington Cabell (1795-1851), with whom he had three more.
